Walking with Awareness

Brother Bao Tang described three skillful uses of mindful walking:
- Nurturing the body with gentle walking allows the mind and the body to move in perfect oneness.
- Embracing strong emotion such as anger, anxiety, and loss. When we walk mindfully with attention to our breathing and to our steps, we are able to recognize that we suffer. Simply recognizing our suffering, we give ourselves safe harbor and an anchor in a storm. We are not so easily carried away by the physical sensations of the emotion, or caught in the mental formations that arise.
- Looking deeply into strong emotion to understand the true nature of our suffering.
Brother Phap Linh shared Thầy’s teaching on Slow Walking practice, or Walking in Full Awareness. This practice is useful within our homes, where distances are not great, and attention can given to each step.
- Mere recognition
- Concentration arrives naturally with repeated practice
