Your Home Is a Bell of Mindfulness

Sr. Thể Nghiêm (Sr. Inspiration) offered the following practice as “homework” in our Dharma Sharing group.
It is easy to practice mindfulness at Plum Village. We have so many brothers and sisters with whom to practice!
When we bring the spirit of mindfulness into our home, the whole family will benefit. Many of us have a small space for meditation, an altar or a sitting space. We can make other spaces “bells of mindfulness” as well.
Choose a small stretch of path as a place of awareness. It might be where you walk from your bedroom to the bathroom in the morning and evening, or the path you take from your house to your car.
Where you walk frequently, with your mind on future activities and tasks, a few steps of mindful breathing can create a moment of rest. This practice becomes a physical part of your home and your day. Make a “contract” with your chosen place to walk mindfully and in the present whenever you are there.
You can add more spaces, or move from one to another from time to time. Try to keep them tidy and clean. You can be like a farmer who tends his or her unruly goats: every few days, you move their paddock so they have fresh grasses to eat. A happy goat is a gentler goat: they will remember the good grazing they found in days past.
When you are comfortable with the practice, you might choose more challenging spaces in your home to be your bells. You could choose your busy kitchen, or your desk where you manage your finances, or where you entertain yourself and your visitors.
