Singing

Just as the short poems of the gathas can help us return to the present moment, the music and words in a song help us share the present moment with others. Singing, alone or with others, is also a kind of food: when we sing music and words that are heart-warming, the heart and the mind are both warmed. Singing together, we are both feeding others and being fed. Together, we create the voice of the Sangha Body, and it is stronger and more joyful.
Very old musical instruments are highly prized, because the repeated vibration of their singing has changed the very nature of their body. The tight connections of glue and wood have loosened, and they have attuned themselves to the rhythms and the harmonies that they themselves have created, song by song, day by day, year after year. The voice grows more resonant over time.
The atoms in a bell, which seem to the eye and to the touch to be permanent and solid, are also fluid. They look without looking for the most comfortable positions, and arrange themselves around the nature of their sound. If you could record the sound of a bell in time-lapse audiography, I am sure you would witness its ripening.
If you pick up a new stringed instrument and a cherished older one, you might compare, and dismiss the newer one for lack of quality. If you looked deeply, however, you could see the beautiful, seasoned melody waiting in the young one. It would be like the oak that is waiting in the acorn: you would water and care for the sprout or the sapling, that it might grow to give you shade. Playing that younger instrument diligently, gently and with attention, you and the instrument and time can make a kind of music that is eternal.
This list of songs is collected from Plum Village songbooks and resources. Where possible, we include links to resources on line, where you can hear one or more versions of the music as performed and recorded by members of the fourfold Sangha. Alone Again (Promise Me)
Alone again I’ll go on
with bent head, but knowing
the immortality of love
and on the long rough road
both sun and moon will shine
Promise me, promise me this day
while the sun is just over head
even as they strike you down
with mountain of hate and violence
remember brother
men is not our enemy
Just your pity, just your love
invincible limitless
hatred will never let you face the beast in man
and one day when you face this beast alone
your courage intact, your eyes kind
Out of your smile will bloom a flower
and those who love you will behold you
across ten thousand worlds of dying
of dying and birth
Alone again I’ll go on
with bent head but knowing
the immortality of love
and on the long rough road
both sun and moon will shine
lightening my way
shares the same tune as “Breathing In, Breathing Out”
Being an island unto myself.
As an island unto myself.
Buddha is my mindfulness.
Shining near, shining far.
Dharma is my breathing,
guarding body and mind.
I am free.
Being an island unto myself.
As an island unto myself.
Sangha is my Five Skandhas,
working in harmony.
Taking refuge in myself.
Coming back to myself.
I am free. I am free. I am free.
a verse to bring us home, wherever we may be.
Arrived
Arrived, arrived
At home, I am at home
Dwelling in the here, and dwelling in the now
Solid as a mountain, free as a white cloud
The door of no-birth and no-death is open, free
and unshakeable.

Breathing In, Breathing Out
Breathing in, breathing out
×2
I am blooming as a flower
I am fresh as the dew
I am solid as a mountain
I am firm as the Earth
I am free.
Breathing in, breathing out
×2
I am water reflecting
What is real, what is true
And I feel there is space
Deep inside of me
I am free. I am free. I am free.

Cultivate Joy
Cultivate joy, hour by hour
Smile by smile, flower by flower
Sow seeds of joy among gloom and despair
Cultivate joy and joy will be there.
When you cultivate joy, joy will be there.
Cultivate peace, hour by hour,
Smile by smile, flower by flower
Sow seeds of peace among hate and fear
Cultivate peace and peace will appear.
Where you cultivate peace, peace will appear.
Cultivate love, hour by hour,
Smile by smile, flower by flower
Sow seeds of love among hard and cold
Cultivate love and love will take hold.
Where you cultivate love, love will take hold!
can be sung as a round
Dear Friends
Dear friends, dear friends
Let me tell you how I feel
You have given me such treasure
I love you so …
Love, joy, peace and ease

Oh! My dear you are so welcome
Love gives you ease …

Nowhere to go, nothing to do
I am in no hurry.

Somewhere to go, something to do
I don’t need to hurry

A deep relaxation song from Brother Pham Hanh
Hello, hello
Hello, hello, something in me
I am aware that you are in there
And you sure have got a good reason to be
Hello, hello, something in me
I am aware that you are in there
And I’m going to keep you company
And I’m going to keep you company
And I’m going to keep
And I’m going to keep
And I’m going to keep you good company

Here is the Pure Land
Here is the Pure Land,
the Pure Land is here.
I smile in mindfulness
And dwell in the present moment.
The Buddha is seen in an autumn leaf,
The Dharma in a floating cloud.
The Sangha body is everywhere.
My true home is right here.
Breathing in, flowers are blooming,
Breathing out, I am aware that
Bamboo is swaying, my mind is clear
and I enjoy every moment.
Here is a version of this song on YouTube.

In Gratitude
In gratitude, you have watered seeds
Of love in me, in gratitude.
In gratitude, I will water seeds
Of love in someone, too.
I know you are there for me
And I am so happy.
In gratitude, you have watered seeds
Of love in me, in gratitude.
In gratitude, I will water seeds
Of love in someone, too.
And if you suffer some,
Please call and I will come.
In gratitude, you have watered seeds
Of love in me, in gratitude.
In gratitude, I will water seeds
Of love in someone, too.

In the 2021 Rains Retreat, Sister Chan Duc offered this simple gāthā for arriving to our seated meditation. She sang to the tune of “Twinkle, Twinkle Little Star” – meditation is child’s play! Or: a beautiful point of light in the night sky
In, Out, Deep, Slow
In, Out, Deep, Slow,
Calm, Ease, Smile, Release.
Present moment
Wonderful moment.

Island of the Self
Breathing in,
I go back to the island within myself.
There are beautiful trees within the island,
There are clear streams of water, there are birds,
Sunshine and fresh air; breathing out I feel safe.
I enjoy going back to my island.
Breathing in, I go back to the ocean within myself
There are dolphins and whales within the ocean,
There are strong tides and currents, there are shells
Starfish and seaweed; breathing out, I feel joy.
I enjoy going back to my ocean.
Breathing in, I go back to the mountain within myself.
There are cliffs and waterfalls within the mountain,
There is deep, solid rock, crystals and gems,
Sparkling caves and high peaks; breathing out, I feel strength.
I enjoy going back to my mountain.
Breathing in, I go back to the blue sky within myself.
There are planets and full moon within the big blue sky,
The are wise owls and eagles, there are suns
Rainbows and graceful birds; breathing out, I feel peace.
I enjoy going back to my blue sky.

My Mind is a Clear Blue Sky
My mind is a clear blue sky,
My mind is a clear blue sky.
And the clouds come
And the clouds go,
But my mind is a clear blue sky.
In subsequent stanzas, replace clouds with
- storms
- thoughts
- fears
- joy..

My Smile Can Move a Mountain
My smile can move a mountain
painting joy up to the sky
like the vapor of the ocean
it continues in all life
My speech can move a mountain
bringing peace in every sound
like the vapor of the ocean
it will always be around
My mind can move a mountain
it goes beyond space and time
like the vapor of the ocean it was never born
and it will never die
it continues in all times ×2

A poem by Thầy, set to music
Please call me by my true names
My joy is like spring, so warm,
It makes flowers bloom
all over the Earth.
My pain is like a river of tears,
So vast it fills the four oceans.
Please call me by my true names.
So I can hear all my cries and laughter at once,
So I can see that my joy and pain are one.
Please call me by my true names.
So that I can wake up,
And the door of my heart
can be left open. ×2
(The door of compassion)

… from the poem by Rumi, in translation:
Silence is an ocean. Speech is a river.
When the ocean is searching for you,
don’t walk into the language-river.
Listen to the ocean;
bring your chattering business to an end.
Traditional words are just babbling
in that presence,
and babbling is a substitute for sight.
Silence is an Ocean
Silence is an ocean
Language is a river
A hundred voices inside saying
That’s enough for now
When the ocean calls to you
Don’t walk to the river
Listen to the ocean
That’s enough for now
Here is a version of the song (True Aspiration of the Heart / YouTube)
Sing of the Wind
I listen to the song of the wind it has no name
I listen to the song of the wind it has no words
I listen to the song of the wind and I can see
The wind is free
The wind is free
I listen to the song of the sky it has no name
I listen to the song of the sky it has no words
I listen to the song of the sky and I can see
The sky is free
The sky is free
I listen to the song of the moon it has no name
I listen to the song of the moon it has no words
I listen to the song of the moon and I can see
The moon is free
The moon is free
And I am free
I am free

Unborn and Indestructible
Refrain:
Unborn and indestructible
×2
Beyond time and space
×2
This body and these feelings
were transmitted to me
by my mother and my father
by my teachers, my friends and all living beings.
refrain
And that which is transmitted
is no less than the transmitter
and I who receive the transmission,
what am I but that which is transmitted to me.
refrain
I am my mother, I am my father
I am my teachers, my friends
I am one and yet am many
I am none, I am all, no beginning, no end.
refrain
This body is not me, these perceptions are not me
and I am not limited by this body
I am one with all of life
I have always been free.
refrain
Here is a version of this song from the Wake Up Plum Village album
We’re All Moving
We’re all moving on a journey to nowhere
Taking it easy, taking it slow.
No more worries, no need to hurry,
Nothing to carry, let it all go.
And When I Rise
And when I rise, let me rise
Like a bird, joyfully.
And when I fall, let me fall,
Like a leaf, gracefully,
without regret.
And when I stand, let me stand,
Like a tree, strong and tall.
And when I lie, let me lie,
Like a lake, peacefully,
calm and still.
And when I work, let me work,
Like a bee, wholeheartedly.
And when I play, let me play,
Like a breeze, refreshingly,
light and clear.

Don’t let your mind get weary and confused
Your will be still, don’t try
Don’t let your heart get heavy child
Inside you there’s a strength that lies
Inside
Don’t let your soul get lonely child
It’s only time, it will go by
Don’t look for love in faces, places
It’s in you, that’s where you’ll find
Kindness
Be here now, here now
Be here now, here now
Don’t lose your faith in me
And I will try not to lose faith in you
Don’t put your trust in walls
‘Cause walls will only crush you when they fall
Down
Be here now, here now
Be here now, here now
From a distance the world looks blue and green
And the snow-capped mountains white
From a distance the ocean meets the stream
And the eagle takes to flight
From a distance there is harmony
And it echoes through the land
It’s the voice of hope
It’s the voice of peace
It’s the voice of every man
From a distance we all have enough
And no one is in need
There are no guns, no bombs, no disease
No hungry mouths to feed
From a distance we are instruments
Marching in a common band
Playing songs of hope
Playing songs of peace
They’re the songs of every man
God is watching us
God is watching us
God is watching us
From a distance
From a distance you look like my friend
Even though we are at war
From a distance I can’t comprehend
What all this war is for
From a distance there is harmony
And it echoes through the land
It’s the hope of hopes
It’s the love of loves
It’s the heart of every man
It’s the hope of hopes
It’s the love of loves
It’s the song of every man
_Here is a link to an early recording, on YouTube.
Go with the flow
No more holding on
Release, let go and surrender
Her waters will carry you to the ocean
Deep within your heart you’ll remember
We are made of water, like the river we know
How to release our fears and let go
We are made of water, like the river we know
How to trust that our path brings us home
Yemanja, Mamãe Oxum
Yemanja, Mamãe Oxum
See how she goes the way of least resistance
See how she moves with the land
Carving her path with a heart of forgiveness
Acceptance and compassion
We are made of water, like the river we know
How to release our fears and let go
We are made of water, like the river we know
How to trust that our path brings us home
Yemanja, Mamãe Oxum
Yemanja, Mamãe Oxum
I receive your messages into my being
I learn to listen, I pray to heal
I return and I welcome back all of me
I am whole, I am complete and I am free like water
I am free like water
Like water
We return to the Ocean like water
Endless silver
Wave forms crashing
Sea’s too big to fit in a frame
Nothing’s too big to fit in my heart
Seas come, seas go
Where they stood deserts blow
Time’s too big to fit in the brain
Nothing’s too big to fit in my heart
Space-time strings bend
World without end
God’s too big to fit in a book
Nothing’s too big to fit in my heart
